If you are a lover of the ocean, play this video, the link is at the bottom. It's very beautiful piece and I love it. I must have played it ten times through already, and now have it on standby for anytime I need a smile. This really hit home for me not because of the surfing, but for it's sheer beauty and flair to bring me back to another part of my life. In that window of time a typical work day meant getting up at 3, at the dock at 4, boat passes through the inlet and off we go, 60 to 80 miles offshore - fishing. My friends would show up from time to time as we fished the canyons of the eastern seaboard, the porpoises, the lone little migrating bird that would sit lookout on the bow of the boat for hours... lay' in up, before moving on. North Atlantic right whales, loggerheads, great hammerheads sharks sunning them selves on the slick calm, and at times, so still you could slide the boat right up on them and pat their armor like back. Mola molas (we called him the chill guy out there), Atlantic Mantas as big as your car, free jumping to the sky. It was so beautiful out there and I miss it. It has been almost five years now since I last visited the "deep" - It's so vast, so quiet, and at other times it can be so grumpy loud. Like I said, I miss it and vow to return.

My interest in the process of simplifying my life is what drew me to this most recent project of mine, the conservative congregation of Mennonites within my hometown and the surrounding counties of State College, Pennsylvania. But what I'm really starting to become aware of, although it's a plain life, it is that they understand who they are, what they symbolize. Their self awareness is nothing short of astonishing. I wish for all people, this - this little bit of genius.

And so it goes, 21 years. 21 years have passed since she has come back to me, you know, the usual, but not so usual first love affair. That torrid first love in which all have been exposed. Those small phrases or a word that only the two of you could know the definition of, forever - not to forget, such as "school bus", "bronco", "court". As two teenagers trying to find their way through adolescence we stayed true, then, as sure as the tides of the oceans, it came time our 21 year voyage, our voyage of discovery.

Yup, we're older now, but we're still young. Still true, still on a journey.

I write this on our 5 year anniversary in learning to discover each other again. She's always been so special to me.

Side note: That's five years without a fight, free of restraints, and also importantly, 5 years of sobriety for me.

WORKED ON A PIECE LAST WEEK FOR THE NATIONAL PARKS CONSERVATION ASSOCIATION. FORT MONOE, LOCATED ON THE TIP OF THE VIRGINIA PENINSULA, PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT PART OF OUR AMERICAN HISTORY, STARTING WITH THE COLONIAL PERIOD AND CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH WHO ESTABLISHED THE JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT.

THE STORY IS ABOUT WHAT'S IN STORE FOR THE FUTURE OF THE PARK BECAUSE IN 2011 THE ARMY IS SCHEDULED TO LEAVE ALONG WITH CIVILIAN AND CONTRACT EMPLOYEES, LEAVING THE FORT OPEN FOR POSSIBLE DEVELOPMENT.

OF MY TIME SPENT THERE I REALIZED HOW BEAUTIFUL THE PARK IS, HOW THE GENERAL PUBLIC COMES TO ENJOY THE SPACE, THE WATER, AND THE QUIETNESS. Here is a breath of fresh air. I met and photographed a man by the name of Tom Wolf who owns this company, Wolf Distributing. Now he could buy a ferrari, but drives a jeep. Could buy a mansion, but lives in an old farm house. Frugal in his individual needs but enormously present and devoted to his community. It was pretty inspiring to have met him and listen to his beliefs.

Here is something to spit out a few words on, not so much about the sport itself, but what if personifies. What a great sport, as with many. What it has done for so many kids of the yesteryear, the present, and the future, way after I'll be gone.

A couple of decades have passed since I was introduced to a gentleman named Julio, who showed me this sport, this sport of fists. Angry teenager that I was, I found this most invigorating! "I can do what?" "Punch on this guy here, and not get in any trouble?" "No expulsions?" "What about in school suspension?" This was the worst kind of suspension, the kind that you would sit there in the principles office and draw little stick figures all day, wishing you got kicked out of school. I could be fishing! I took pride in the bruises, cherished the scars, especially the three that stain my face 20 years later. I remember.

Eventually I left the gym in that small town of mine, the only town I ever knew. At twenty three I packed up my little Honda Accord and headed south 700 miles to attend that doodad of a place they call photography school. If I only knew then... To compress a whole lot of shit down, I'll keep this short, very short.

To realize I just awoke four years ago from that deep sleep. I came to spirit you could say. Eighteen years of alcoholism, eighteen years of sadness and self pity. I'm very different now and have realized those patterns I carried throughout the past, many of which kept me from succeeding at any of the goals that I set for my self, always falling short, always. Well, I'm happy to say today those struggles have fallen behind. I'm soaring now.

Wherever I lived at the time, either it be the Doraville Boxing Club in Atlanta or Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn, I was never far from this sport I love. I have since left the Big Apple behind, and moved home, to my hometown, that little town I once thought I would never leave... and when I finally did, thought I would never return. Funny how some things come full circle! And yes, I've returned to my old gym, except now I'm now I'm called coach, and proud of it.

So when someone asks me: "What do you do?" I can tell them I'm a photographer - and a boxing coach. Proudly!!

For this year Carl Nielson (a very cool designer / creative director) and I came up with this promo that I was really excited to get out the door and into art buyers hands across the country. The first one we sent out measured 8.5 x 11 opening to an eye full, 34 x 11 inch spread. Totally wrapped around a commissioned project relating to a residential Jewish camp (Camps Airy and Louise) tucked away in the mountains of Maryland. What a fun little project. Big pictures, spread across the whole page, now how couldn't you love that? Well, when I heard art buyers were "loving it" but tossing them into the can because it was too large to keep, my dang feelings were hurt. That sucked. Really sucked. I was like, hm... but... "We love it, but have to shit can it. Thank you very much." Nice... Lesson: Don't make your photo promos so large that they might end up in the garbage and, instead of spending 8 thousand dollars you'll only spend 4 on a smaller version.

Now, the second promo, 6 x 8 inches was a compilation of some of my work. No reports of shit canning so far.... Cool - right ? Look at all that money I'm saving you!
